It is with deep sadness that Karate BC announces the passing of Paul Sexton, a long-time member of our organization and a valued member of our tournament referee community.
Paul’s dedication to karate and his generous spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He gave his time and energy so freely, and his kindness, quiet strength, and commitment to our community will not be forgotten.
On behalf of Karate BC, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Paul’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a friend to many and will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
Words in memory of Paul, from some of his students:
“A few strengths come to mind…Humble and patient, always taking the time to help students to learn at their own pace and what they were capable of. It didn’t matter if they were a first-time white belt or an experienced black belt. Generous. He not only taught karate but shared his vast knowledge of the history of it and the meanings behind the techniques and the katas.”
“His passion for learning and improving himself is inspiring, it makes others want to improve themselves.”
“I’m grateful that my children have known him and have such a great role model and mentor.”
“Paul is in the true sense of the word, a Sensei.”
“His self discipline and consistency is also another strength and how he conveyed that. Especially to kids that are learning a martial art like karate.”
“Giving them the confidence to walk away from situations but defend themselves as a last resort.”

“Paul was a great inspiration to many people in life in so many ways. He was always in a good mood and just wanted to spread happiness. We did know that he was sick, but he still found the strength to come to his last seminar in Qualicum for his Yondan test and passed with flying colours. He wanted to go out his own way. Nobody can argue with that. He did it his way. You will truly be missed my friend, rest in peace.” – Holly Molgaard-Tuttle
