As we wrap up 2025, I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you—athletes, coaches, referees, parents, volunteers, board members, and staff—for your time, commitment, and care.
Whether through organizing tournaments, coaching at the grassroots level, supporting our athletes provincially and nationally, or giving generously of your time to committees and programs, you helped strengthen Karate BC in ways both seen and unseen. This year was a testament to what’s possible when we show up for each other.
What We Accomplished in 2025
- Hosted the 2025 BC Open & Canada Open
At the Richmond Olympic Oval, we welcomed international athletes from 10 countries, delivering a high-quality experience for competitors, coaches, referees, and spectators. These events elevated Karate BC’s profile and gave us valuable insights as we evaluate future event models.
- Hosted the 2025 Karate Canada National Championships
In partnership with Karate Canada and the Province of British Columbia, Karate BC proudly hosted the 2025 National Championships at the Richmond Olympic Oval. This world-class event was set against the stunning backdrop of coastal mountains and ocean views, and embraced by the vibrant Richmond community. For many, it was an unforgettable experience—highlighted by the success of our BC athletes, who showcased their skills and spirit on home ground.
- Refined Our High-Performance Pathway
Led by Head Coach Toshi Uchiage and the High Performance Committee, we strengthened our focus on training consistency, athlete development, and targeted performance goals. With the addition of Pam Ross as High Performance Program Coordinator, we are well-positioned to advance the program in 2026 and beyond.
- Elevating Officials
We welcomed Brendan Flower as our new Officials Development Program Coordinator. A special congratulations to Trevor Walmsley, selected to serve on the World Karate Federation (WKF) Referee Commission—an international honour that brings pride to our community. Rob Walker has stepped into the role of Chair of the Referee Committee, and Ashtin Callaghan is now serving as Chair of the Coaching Committee.
- Reinvigorated the Grassroots Program
Under the leadership of 1st Vice-President Julie Zilber, we restructured our Grassroots Committee and launched a hybrid development model that increases access to training and competition opportunities for athletes of all levels across BC.
- Strengthened Governance
We worked with Sport Law and viaSport to evolve our governance and operations in alignment with the Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) model—helping ensure Karate BC remains focused, responsive, and well-prepared for the future of sport in British Columbia.
- Promoted Gender Equity
We established a Special Subcommittee on Gender Equity to support stronger representation, participation, and access across all levels of our sport. Their insights will shape future policies and programming that reflect the diversity of our karate community.
- Acknowledging Leadership
We thank Past President Donna Gardecki for her leadership, integrity, and her open-door approach that ensured members were heard. Donna made significant inroads with the BC Commissioner of Sport and helped launch several new initiatives that set Karate BC on a path of sustainable growth.
As we head into 2026, we welcome Incoming President Fred Lee, who brings a strong business background and a member-first mindset. Fred’s leadership promises to carry Karate BC to new heights, with a continued focus on inclusion, professionalism, and athlete development.
Looking Ahead to 2026
- Launching our new Strategic Plan and updated Governance Model
- Evaluating future Canada Open event delivery formats
- Supporting BC athletes at the 2026 Senior and Junior National Championships
- Preparing for the 2026 BC Winter Games in Trail–Rossland
- Growing training opportunities through our expanded Grassroots Program
- Advancing Gender Equity goals with programming, policies, and leadership representation that reflect the strength and diversity of our community
This year reaffirmed something important: when we lead with heart and come together around a shared vision, we can accomplish remarkable things.
Thank you for everything you’ve contributed this year—and everything you’re helping build as we step into 2026.
Wishing you and your families a joyful holiday season and a healthy, hopeful New Year.
With warm regards,
Larry Feagan
