Do you want to help shape the future of refereeing in British Columbia? Karate BC is seeking a dedicated contractor to serve as Referee Development Program Coordinator. This role is vital to ensuring refereeing remains strong, accessible, and sustainable across the province — creating opportunities for the next generation of referees while ensuring every zone in BC has the qualified referees needed to support sanctioned events and tournaments.
Key Responsibilities
Representation & Leadership
- Represent Karate BC in all matters related to referees and referee development.
- Review the current referee development structure and recommend measurable improvements.
Recruitment & Retention
- Develop and implement a referee recruitment and retention program.
- Promote refereeing as a pathway for youth, athletes, volunteers, and para-karate participants.
- Deliver recruitment campaigns across all zones in BC.
- Establish mentorship opportunities, especially for youth and junior referees, to progress through certification levels.
- Build sustainable referee pools in every zone, reflecting Karate BC’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and diverse representation.
Certification & Training

Develop and deliver annual referee courses for Regional and Provincial certifications, including:

Securing instructors and venues

Coordinating registration with the Karate BC office

Collaboration

Work closely with the Referee Committee Chair, committee members, Karate BC staff, Board, and partners to:
- Participate in committee meetings and provide meeting notes to Karate BC’s President and Office
- Develop a provincial referee development plan
- Draft and manage the annual referee development budget
- Provide quarterly reports to the Board and AGM
Financial Oversight
- Review referee travel and honorarium expenses.
- Propose a fair, sustainable compensation framework.
Administration & Resources
- Manage and update the certified referee database, providing ongoing reports that track growth by zone, certification, para-referees, visible minority representation, and gender.
- Provide staff with information related to the Referees as required by viaSport and other organizations.
Event Support
- Work with the Referee Committee to secure referees for Karate BC events.
- Develop and maintain a referee resource area on the Karate BC website (pathways, resources, policies).
This role directly supports Karate BC’s priorities by:
- Competition Structure & Sport Experience – Building consistency in refereeing and ensuring tournaments are fully staffed across zones.
- Referee Development – Strengthening recruitment pipelines and certification/mentorship pathways.
- Grassroots Growth & Club Collaboration – Engaging clubs to promote refereeing as part of karate participation.
- Equity, Inclusion & Cultural Engagement – Expanding access to refereeing opportunities province-wide, including rural and underrepresented regions.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience in sport refereeing, referee development, or a related leadership role.
- Experience chairing or serving on committees and working with volunteers.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with MS Office and/or Google Workspace.
- Knowledge of Safe Sport principles, with a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Commitment to advancing gender equity, visible minority inclusion, and para-referee pathways.
Preferred
- Experience with a Provincial or National Sport Organization.
- Experience in grant writing or fundraising to support referee development.
