In the 2005/2006 competition season, Karate B.C. introduced a Zone system to support athlete, coach and official development on a regional basis, and to select athletes to compete in the annual B.C. Provincial Championships.
Under the Zone system, an initial round of tournaments takes place on a regional basis. (The "zones" are based on the same regions that have sent teams of the B.C. Winter Games for many years.) This means no-one has to travel too far for a chance at becoming "Regional Champion."
Based on the results of the Zone tournament, each of the regions then sends a team to compete in the B.C. Provincial Championship, which takes place in the spring. That tournament determines the B.C. Champion in each division. In the divisions that are eligible for B.C. Team membership, the top four competitors become members of the B.C. Team, and will participate in B.C. Team training sessions. A final Team Selection Tournament determines the members of the B.C. Team that will compete at the N.K.A. National Black Belt Championships.
The map to the right shows the geographic areas covered by each Zone. The list below the map provides a text description of the regions included in each Zone, with links to the Zone information pages. The Zone information pages are administered by the Zones and contain announcements and new stories that the Zone administrators have chosen to publish on their pages.
