At the Annual Sport BC Awards Banquet a volunteer from each sport is recognized for their contribution to the development of that sport.

This year's recipient is Tom Mah of Kelowna. Tom has been recognized due to his many years of involvement in Karate BC. Tom has excelled as an athlete, official, instructor, and is a past president of KBC.

Most recently, Tom has spearheaded the ever expanding Karate BC Officials Certification and Training Program, serving as Chair and the Okanagan region coordinator. The Awards banquet will take place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in March 2003.

HIDEMI AND TOSHI PREMIER ATHLETIC AWARD WINNERS

Brother and sister, Toshi and Hidemi Uchiage have been named by Karate BC as the recipients of the Premier Athletic Awards.

Each year the Premiers Athletic Awards recognize the top female and male athletes from each sport participating in the BC Athlete Assistance Program. The BC Athlete Assistance Program, administered by the B.C. Sport and Community Development Branch, provides financial support to athletes who demonstrate potential and commitment to represent BC and Canada in athletic competition.

Toshi and Hidemi, both national champions, were named by Karate BC last year as Junior Male and Female Athletes of the year respectively. They are students and offspring of Takeshi Uchiage, Chief Instructor of the Steveston Karate Club and one of Canada's highest ranking officials.

Toshi and Hidemi recently both represented Canada at the WKF World Championships in Madrid, Spain.
