JAMES JOHNSON APPOINTED TO WKF DIRECTING COMMITTEE
|
|
|
James Johnson, Executive Director of Karate BC, and Chief Instructor of
the Burnaby Karate Club has been elected to the Directing Committee of the
World Karate Federation.
James was also recently appointed to the
Technical Committee of the Pan American Karate Federation. The election was held
during Congress, in conjunction with the 6th World
Karate Championships in Madrid, Spain from November 18th
to 25th 2002.
This will be the second term that Johnson has served on the WKF
Directing Committee. The WKF is the body recognized by the
International Olympic Committee as the governing authority for Karate. The
organization, headed by WKF President Antonio Espinos of Spain, is working toward the
inclusion of Karate into the Olympics.

TOM MAH WINS PRESIDENT'S AWARD FOR
KARATE |

|
At the Annual Sport BC Awards Banquet a volunteer from each sport is
recognized for their contribution to the development of that sport.
This year's recipient is Tom Mah of Kelowna. Tom has been recognized due to
his many years of involvement in Karate BC. Tom has excelled as an
athlete, official, instructor, and is a past president of KBC.
Most recently, Tom has spearheaded the ever expanding Karate BC Officials Certification
and Training Program, serving as Chair and the Okanagan region coordinator.
The Awards banquet will take place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in March 2003.

HIDEMI AND TOSHI PREMIER ATHLETIC AWARD WINNERS |
|
|
Brother and sister, Toshi and Hidemi Uchiage have been named by Karate
BC as the recipients of the Premier Athletic Awards.
Each year the Premiers Athletic Awards recognize the top female and male athletes from each
sport participating in the BC Athlete Assistance Program. The BC Athlete
Assistance Program, administered by the B.C. Sport and Community
Development Branch, provides financial support to athletes who
demonstrate potential and commitment to represent BC and Canada in athletic
competition.
Toshi and Hidemi, both national champions, were named by
Karate BC last year as Junior Male and Female Athletes of the year
respectively. They are students and offspring of Takeshi Uchiage, Chief
Instructor of the Steveston Karate Club and one of Canada's highest
ranking officials.
Toshi and Hidemi recently both represented Canada at the
WKF World Championships in Madrid, Spain.

NORMA FOSTER TO TEACH "20,000 WOMEN" IN IRAN
|
|
|
Norma Foster, of the Burnaby Guseikai Karate Club, and recent inductee
into the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame is off to Iran to teach Karate to
"20,000 women".
In a letter from the President of the Islamic Republic
of Iran Karate Federation, Norma was invited to "promote the level of
referee, coaching and training the national team", and "to promote the technical
level of Iran women in Karate." The invitation was made on behalf of the
West Asia Karate Federation, as well.
Ms. Foster is Chair of the World
Karate Federation's Womens Committee which has been given the responsibility
of recommending ways to insure that there is compliance with the IOC
directive stating that women must be fully represented at all levels of every
aspect of sport governance. The World Karate Federation is co-sponsoring the trip
which will take place in early January 2003.

KARATE BC TO HOST 2003 JR. PAN AMERICAN KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPS |

Karate BC, and the National Karate Association of Canada have been granted
the opportunity to host the 2003 Pan American Junior Karate Championships
by the Pan American Karate Federation.
Last month in Madrid, Spain, Mr. William Millerson, President of the PKF, confirmed that Canada will host the
event. Over 20 countries and 600 athletes are expected to attend this
annual event. Richmond's Minoru Arena has been designated as the venue
for the three-day event.
The championships will take place the third or
fourth week of August 2003. The Pan American
Karate Federation (PKF) is made up of 39 member
countries throughout North and South America and the
Caribbean. It is one of 5 continental unions that
comprise the World Karate Federation (WKF).

KARATE BC OFFERS NCCP TECHNICAL LEVEL 1 COURSE |
|
For the first time in history, the Karate BC NCCP Technical Course is being
offered to non KBC members.
In an agreement reached between the National Karate Association of Canada and the Coaching Association of Canada,
NKA Membership will no longer be a pre-requisite for attendance. The next course will be January 11 - 12, 2003 at Douglas College in New Westminster.
Course fee is $107 for KBC members and $214 for non-members. To sign
