KARATE BC A STANDOUT

By all accounts the 14th Pan American Junior Championships was an outstanding success.

Congratulations are pouring in for all the volunteers whose hard work and dedication made this event one of the best ever. The complete event lasted one full week, staring with the Pan American Karate Federation Referees clinic and culminating in the finals of the PKF Junior Championships. The opening ceremonies, which featured demonstrations of local cultural groups, was attended by Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, PKF President William Millerson, and NKA President Dan Wallis, who all gave welcoming messages to the over 300 athletes and 700 spectators present.

Bob Howlett, Mark Allen, Rassamee Ling, Marshall, Andreas Kuntze, Christine Weltsceff, Sandy Thorpe, Julie Zilber, William Chung, Trevor Walmsley, Cheryl Gray, Lawrence Brown, Jennifer Chung, Bob Thurston, Brian James, Garson Ho, Mariele Benson, Akira Sato, David Akutagawa, Dr. Chee Ling and many others deserve a round of kudos for a job well done.

JR. PAN AM CHAMPIONSHIPS

On behalf of all NKA members I would like to thank Karate BC for hosting the 2003 Jr Pan American Karate Championships August 26-31, 2003 in Richmond, BC.

This was a huge undertaking: British Columbia was up to the task and we should be proud of them for showing both the courage to attempt this International event and for demonstrating the required organizational skill to put on such an event.

Thank you James Johnson and your extremely dedicated and hard working group of volunteers. You did Canada proud!

In International competitiion they focus on the Gold Medals: Canada was third in winning gold medals with 7 Golds!! (10 countries participated).

I would like to thank our team of three coaches: Manuel Monzon, Patricia Beauregaard, and Interim coach ,Louise Provencher (she filled in for Gerard Lauzier) for the excellent work they did for the athletes last week. These coaches had to look after 41 athletes as well as prepare them for their competitions. Considering the athletes brought home 21 medals, I say the coaches did a great job.

Dan Wallis

President, National Karate Association

TOSHI TAKE GOLD

Toshi Uchiage, reigning Canadian Kata Champion, emerged undefeated at the 14th Pan American Junior Karate Championships in Richmond, August 29 & 30th.

Sister, Sumi Uchiage, teamed up with the Nakagawa sisters to win silver in Female Team Kata. COMMONWEALTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

(source: Mitchell German )
Canada sent 9 athletes last weekend to compete in the Commonwealth Championships in Manchester England. We won 3 medals at this championships:

Btissama Essadiqi - silver in open
Men's team kata - silver
Jennifer Guillette - bronze -53kg

In total there were 15 countries at the championships. Canada finished poorly at 8th overall with 3 medals. The competition was good calibre and was taken seriously by many countries including England whom had their complete -A- squad there, as well, Australia, Malaysia and New Zealand were in full pursuit.

I would compare the level to the Pan Ams but with an European twist, very worth while attending as all of our fighters had 2 or more fights and most got a chance to fight world level athletes. The tournament was well organized and everyone had a great experiance.
