BURNABY KARATE ASSOCIATION

  Sunday July 6th, 2003 - members of the newly formed Burnaby Karate Association participated in the Burnaby Discovery Days Festival at Dear Lake Park.

Co-op Student, Jennifer Chung, manned the Karate BC booth and handed out information on the upcoming Junior Pan American Championships, August 28th - 30th, as well as information about Karate BC and its programs.

Present to assist from Burnaby Guseikai were Kyle and Jackie Kattler, Marcha, Asrar and Omar Flores Valasquez, and Yumi and Bob Moonie.

From Burnaby Gima-Ha were Akane Kondo, Rene Scavington, Marisa Vanderlende, Leo Duncan, Kathy Marando, Elisa Marando and Bree Jones.

Approximate 5,000 people attended the annual event, which features art and culture displays of Burnaby clubs and organizations.


RICHMOND CITY CELEBRATATION

  Richmond City Centre Celebration July 12th, Karate BC members were present to promote Karate BC and its programs in general, and the 2003 Junior Pan American Championships in particular.

Members of the Steveston Karate Club, led by Canadian Champion Hidemi Uchiage were scheduled to perform a demonstration, but unable to due to inclement weather. An information booth was manned by Joseph Nerida, Alex, Katherine, Danny and Elaine; all members of the Ku Yu Kai Richmond organization.

Karate BC summer students, Jennifer Chung and Yuka Sugawara were also on hand to talk to the public. The event took place at the Richmond Oval.


BC'S NIGEL NIKOLAISAN - GRAND CHAMP

Nigel Nikolaisan, Campbell River, B. C. was crowned Grand Champion of Kata recently at the 11th Kubota World Karate Championships held in Toronto, Canada on Sunday, July 12/13/03.

Nigel accommplished this by winning 1st Place in the Men's Black Belt Japanese Kata Division; 2nd Place in the Men's Black Belt Okinawan Kata Division; 1st Place the Men's Black Belt Open Kata Division and then, defeating all other Black Belt Kata Division winners and runner-ups to capture the coveted 11th Kubota World Cup Kata Grand Champion title.

        
 
 
 

HARD WORKING STUDENTS

Yuka Sugawara (left) and Jennifer Chung (right) are the latest addition to the group of Pan American Championships volunteers.

Yuka is visiting Canada from Japan and is here through a work experience program of the International Language Schools of Canada. Jennifer is an SFU Communications Co-op student working at the KBC office and will be with us until the end of August.

It's been a real pleasure having these two delightful young people helping with the organizing of such a prestigious event.

2004 KARATE BC FALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

2004 Fall Provincial Championships Awarded to Kelowna

Karate BC is pleased to announce that the 2004 Fall Provincial Champion ships have been awarded to the Rodney Hobson Karate academy of Kelowna, BC.

Sensei Hobson says that his club will put on the best tournament ever. We look forward to working towards that end with all the volunteers to insure that is a reality. See you in Kelowna on October 16th, at the Okanagan University College! This event will be a BC Team qualifier.

KARATE BC SEEKING NEW COACHES

TO ALL CLUBS AND MEMBERS:

KARATE BC IS CURRENTLY SEEKING VOLUNTEERS TO ASSIST WITH PREPARING THE BC KARATE TEAM TO WIN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN MARCH 2004. THE FOLLOWING POSITIONS ARE AVAILABLE:

Assistant Coach - Kata This person will assist the Head Coach primarily, but not limited to those competitors who will be competing in the kata competition. This individual should be a member in good standing of KBC, be certified at Level 1 in the National Certification Program, and have some competition experience. A Law Enforcement Records Check is mandatory for this position. Must be willing to attend all training sessions and the National Black Belt Championships.

Assistant Coach - This individual would assist the Head Coach in preparing the BC Team to excel at the national championships. Same qualifications as above.

Equal consideration will be given to applicants of both genders.

*There are currently no female coaches on the BC Coaching staff.

Those interested should send resumes and expressions of interest to KBC office. Deadline is August 15, 2003.

KARATE BC TO HOST 2003 JR. PAN AMERICAN KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie will be attending the opening ceremony on for the 14th Pan American Junior Karate Championships taking place on August 29-30 at Minoru Arena in Richmond.

Among the BC athletes that will competing at this event will be Richmond’s own Hidemi, Toshi and Sumi Uchiage as well as Asuka Nakagawa.

Other athletes include: Kelsey Corbett of Surrey; Campbell River’s Brittany Fuccenecco and Nigel Nikolaisen; Rebecca James and Valentyna Zolotarova of Vancouver and Andrew Thompson of Prince George.
The Jr. Pan Ams will also be welcoming athletes from Puerto Rico, Curacao, Mexico, Venezuela, USA, Bahamas, Argentina, Brazil and Canada.

Karate BC Official of the Year and member of the World Karate Federation Referees Council Norma Foster will be officiating this event.

The championships will take place 29th - 31st of August 2003.  The Pan American Karate Federation (PKF) is made up of 39 member countries throughout North and South America and the Caribbean.  It is one of 5 continental unions that comprise the World Karate Federation (WKF).

TOSHI UCHIAGE TO COMPETE IN PAN AMS

Toshi Uchiage will be one step closer to realizing his life long dream of becoming World Champion when he strives for a gold medal at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo taking place from August 1-16. Training out of the Steveston Karate Club in Richmond, Toshi will be one of eight athletes that will be representing Canada.

Toshi’s competition highlights include:
* 1st place in Junior Men’s Kata and Men’s Individual Kata at the 2003 National Black Belt Championships * Bronze medal at the Senior Pan American Karate Championships * 2003 Karate BC Male Athlete of the Year * Recipient of the 2001 and 2002 Premier’s Athlete’s Award

It will be a busy summer for this young athlete as he will also be competing in the Pan American Junior Karate Championships at Minoru Arena in Richmond from August 29-30.
