BC KARATE TEAM SHOWS WELL AT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP source Karate BC Media ( J.L.Veltri )
The BC Karate Team earned a total of 31 medals at The National Karate Tournament in Toronto, Ontario. Bringing home medals yesterday were athletes from across the province.
Richmond Athletes Lead the Pack
Leading the medal pack were athletes from Richmond Karate Clubs. Six of Steveston’s athletes brought home 30% of the medals for BC.
Leading the group of athletes was the UCHIAGE clan of Sumi, Hidemi and Toshide Uchiage, each earning a gold medal in their respective event and belt/weight categories.
Among the other Richmond medal athletes were Nancy Sham with a silver in the women’s kumite event (-53kg), Valentyna Zolotorova, with a silver in the junior women’s kata event and Nao Nakatsuka with a 4th place finish in the women’s individual kata program.
This past year, brother and sister Toshide and Hidemi Uchiage were named outstanding Junior male and Junior female athlete of the year for Karate BC while Nao Nakatsuka was given the outstanding honor for Karate BC’s female (adult) athlete of the year.
Each of the athletes train at the Steveston Karate Club.
Kenny Lim, also of Richmond gave a silver medal performance at the Championship. The 24 year-old athlete trains at the Richmond Shito-Ryu Karate Club.
Medal performances from Lower Mainland athletes were made by Ryan James of the South Slope JKA Karate Club. James, 15, managed to grab both a silver and bronze medal in the kumite and individual kata event respectively.
Other medal performances from Lower Mainland athletes included:
Charmaine Wong: silver in the cadet women’s individual kata event / 16-17 age category
Welton Vo: - gold in the cadet men individual kata event / 16-17 age category
Kris Lida: - silver juvenile men - 50 kg. / 14-15 year old category
Richard Mosdell: - bronze mens kumite - 80 kg
Each of the lower mainland clubs are affiliate clubs with Karate BC. Karate BC is the sanctioned amateur sport governing body for the sport of karate in the province of BC.
Karate BC offers the only access to the competitions recognized by the relevant sport governing bodies that include the COA, Pan American Games, and BC Winter Games to name three.
