| SPORT BC PRESIDENTS AWARD |
March 2002 - Sport BC, Canada
Every year each Sport Governing body nominates an outstanding volunteer who
has made significant contributions to their sport for the Sport BC
Presidents Award.
This award is presented at the Annual Sport BC Athlete
of the Year Banquet. The recipient for the Karate BC President's Award
this year was Kenneth Corrigan of the Prince George Nechako Karate
Club.
Ken has served Karate BC for 30 years in many capacities, and is
currently Treasurer, Sport Chair for both the BC Winter and Northern Winter
Games, and the Officials Coordinator for the North.

Over 700 Compete at Steveston Again
Pascal Schram wins a plane ticket
The 29th Steveston International Tournament was held on March 9 and had over 700 competitors.
We had a Kata division, which was 17 and under (age), all belts. However the competitors had to do Kata’s accordingly to the new WKF Kata system
This tournament is not only one of the largest tournaments in Canada, but also the top officials and competitors come to participate from other countries. The guests this year were; Dr. Julius Thiry(Vice President of PKF), Gene Tibon(Vice President of USANKF), Kiyoshi Yamazaki(WKF technical committee), Katsutaka Tanaka(WKF Referee Councilor) and Yoshiaki Ajari(The Chief Instructor of USA Wado-Kai). WKF officials attending were; Chuck Sweigart, Zvonko Celebija. International officials attending were; Suenori Tominaga, Akira Sato, Brian James and Leslie Bowers. 45 licensed officials worked well together and 748 competitors participated from 51 different Dojo’s.

Steveston Karate Club members and brother and sister, Toshi Uchiage and
Hidemi Uchiage are Karate BC's Junior Male and Female Athletes of the
Year.
The two stole the nomination-based honors from athletic performances in
2001 that excelled at local, national and international competition.
Toshide, a grade 11 student at McMatt Secondary, captured 1st place
wins at both the local Steveston International and the Karate BC Spring
Provincials.
On the National scene, he was named the Individual Kata Grand Champion
for his age/group category at the National Karate Championships. He
copied his performance internationally by capturing 1st place for his age/ group
category as well a being named the Junior Male Grand Champion at the
2001 Pan American Games in Port of Spain Tobago.
His sister, called Demi for short, also proved prominent on all
fronts. The 18-year old 1st year UBC student captured gold at the local Steveston
tournament, the National Karate Championships and the Washington State
International for her age (16/17) and event category Kata.
Both Uchiages have competed in the sport for 8 years under coach
Takeshi Uchiage, who is also their father. The two athletes aspire to World
Championship gold.

Richmond's Nao Nakatsuka captured two Karate BC awards this week
as she was named Karate BC Female Athlete of the Year as well as the
year's recipient for the annual Vince Redfern Memorial Scholarship.
The annual scholarship honor is given to an athlete in the Karate BC
provincial system who excels at both academics and athletics at the
same time.
The 22-year old Nakatsuka excels academically as a 4th year
Pharmacology student at the University of British Columbia, and at the same time,
maintains her position as one of the Associations top female athletes.
In the women's kata event, she was ranked in 8th place at the 2001
Womens World Cup in Japan, 4th at the Pan American Games in El Salvador, and
1st place at the National Karate Championships.
It was her placing in both national and international competition in
2001 that helped her to capture this year's Karate BC female (adult) athlete
of the year award.

Revelstoke's Ben Shook Top Man for Karate in BC
When 23 year old Benjamin Shook decided to participate in the sport of
karate for the simple reason he wanted for fun and exercise, he never
expected that eight years later he would be the sports top man.
This week, the Revelstoke native and current BCIT student was awarded
the Karate BC Male Athlete of the Year.
The nomination-based award is given to a male in the province who
excels in the sport of karate over a competition year.
In 2001, Shook brought home gold from virtually every major tournament
he competed in including; the Fall and Spring Provincial Championships,
the Sato Cup, BC Team Try Outs and the National Karate Championships.
Shook, a member of the Revelstoke Shotokan Karate Club will be
competing in the Karate BC Provincial Championships on Saturday, April 13 at
Capilano College in North Vancouver

MALAHAT MAN WINS PROVINCIAL SPORT AWARD
Brent Parsons of Malahat has been named the Tiger Balm - Karate BC
Athlete of the Month. The award is given to a male or female in the Karate BC
system that exhibits excellence in the sport of karate.
Parsons, 18 years old is a blue belt karate athlete from the Fernando
Correia School of Karate and is coached under club head instructor,
Fernando Correia.
Of his young protégé, Correia stated; “ Parsons is one of those
students who inspires all other belts. Over the past 6 years as a member of our
do jo he has never missed a class, trains diligently, and his demeanor and
attitude demonstrate the true spirit of karate by always putting others
ahead of him. He is a valued member of our do jo and a superb
candidate for an award of this kind”
The Tiger Balm Karate BC award was established to highlight stand out
members in the Karate BC club system. A Tiger Balm Award recipient
stands out among 4700 members across the province.
Brent is currently attending Comosun College, where he is taking
gardening and horticulture.
Karate BC is the only sanctioned body for the sport of Karate in the
province of BC with. The provincial sport association offers the only
access to the competitions recognized by the relevant sport governing bodies
that includes; the COA, Pan American Games, BC Winter Games to name three.

The Kid Sport fund is a charity sponsored by Sport BC.Grants of up to
$100 can be obtained to fund kids activity fees, when they can't afford
it.
