KARATE BC 3M NCCP LEVEL 1 TECHNICAL
February 8,9,10 - Douglas College, New Westminster BC, Canada

15 Karate BC members took part in the NCCP Level 1 Technical Course at Douglas College in New Westminster. The Course was administered by James Johnson and Donna Gardecki, Master Course Conductors and members of the NKA NCCP Committee.

The Level 1 Technical Course explores subjects such as Karate History and Philosophy, Teaching methods, Safety and Injury prevention and bio mechanics. Proper standards of instruction and discussed and reinforced during group exploration of the above subjects.

All Karate BC Instructors are required to complete the NCCP Level 1 Certification.

BC ATHLETE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The BC Athlete Assistance Program is funded by the provincial government and administered by the various sport organizations in British Columbia. The total allocation for Karate is $3181.00.

The following athletes have been named as recipients of the BC Athlete Assistance Grants administered by Karate BC.

Each athlete will receive a total of $530.16

The decision of the Karate BC selection committee may be appealed 7 days after the date of this document. Appeals may be made to the provincial Athlete Appeals Committee of the Sport Branch within 21 days of this notice.


SPORT STATUS REPORT
Excerpts from on the most recent report by Sandra Stevenson, President & CEO Sport BC.

Sport programs that will be eliminated in the 2004/o5 budget include the Athlete Assistance Program and funding to the Nationals Coaching Institute.

There will be cuts to the sport budget beyond the programs being discontinued. The exact cuts for the 2002-03 fiscal year will not be released until the budget is tabled on February 19, 2002. Cuts this year are predicted to be modest, with the potential for larger cuts in 2003-04 and 2004-05.

It is expected that sport will be protected as a core program within the Ministry of Community Aboriginal and Women's Services.


PREMIER'S ATHLETIC AWARDS CEREMONY
The Premier's Athletic Awards Ceremony will be held on March 8, 2002. The ceremony will take place at the BC Sports Hall of Fame from 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Each year a male and female from each sport is honored at a luncheon, where the Premier presents them with an award recognizing their accomplishments. This year Nancy Sham and Toshi Uchiage are the recipirents. Both athletes are members of the Steveston Karate Club, which is lead by Takeshi Uchiege, Toshi's father.

It is the second time Nancy has been recognized with this award. Toshi was named the 2001 Junior Athlete of the Year by the National Karate Association. Nancy won a Gold medal at the 2001 Pan American Junior Championships in Trinidad.


KID SPORT FUND
The Kid Sport fund is a charity sponsored by Sport BC.Grants of up to $100 can be obtained to fund kids activity fees, when they can't afford it.
