| Research indicates that puberty defines a
threshold when young girls and boys are likely to become
less involved in physical activities and face many
challenges with respect to peer influences, negative
self-image, confusing and conflicting media messages and
overall lack of confidence. In many cases this causes
vulnerability to negative life choices, behaviours and
activities.
Fit4Defense
was created for youth for the purposes of violence prevention, increased safety and risk reduction. It is much more than a self-defense program. It offers instructors an effective, standardized curriculum for providing information and techniques to gain life skills, improve communication and manage anger in a dynamic and exciting environment.
Fit4Defense motivates youth to participate in community sport and recreation programs.
Program outcomes
include:
- increased fitness
levels
- self care behaviours
- coping strategies
for anger management
- involvement in
ongoing sport activities
- ability to identify
risks
- increased self
confidence and well-being
- assertive
communication
- ability to access
community resources

Fit4Defense
Training Manual
is being introduced with instructor-training workshops
province-wide utilizing a ‘train the trainers’ model
for recreational and youth workers, teachers, martial
arts instructors and other persons working with young
persons. From these workshops instructors are selected
to pilot “Fit4Defense" sessions
as part of their ongoing physical education or social
programs with the assistance of a program mentor. This
builds the capacity within local communities so that the
benefits of violence prevention and assertiveness
training are sustained.
