Sensei Shane Higashi President Janet Harder Dr. Tsuyoshi Chitose (1898 - 1984), also known as as Chinen Gua in Okinawa, was the founder of Chito-Ryu Karate. Born in Kumochi, Naha, on October 18th, 1898 Dr. Chitose created Chito-Ryu after spending years studying both Shorin-Ryu and Shorei-Ryu. He became the Supreme Instructor, 10th dan, of Chito Kai of the All Japan Karate Doh Federation. Dr. Chitose studied under Kiyan Chotoku, Aragaki Ou, and Motobu Choyu. He felt that there were advantages and disadvantages to both styles, Shorin-Ryu and Shorei-Ryu, and by combining what he felt was the best of the two he created Chito-Ryu. INTERNATIONAL CHITO RYU KARATE-DO ASSOCIATION Chito Ryu Karate is headed by its current Soke, Tsuyoshi Chitose, who succeeded his father Dr. Chitose (1898-1984), the founder of Chito Ryu. The technical standards, curricula, ranking examinations and teaching certifications are the responsibility of the Soke, who is assisted in administration by the International Chito Ryu Karate Do Association. The ICRKA promotes the teaching and practice of Chito Ryu Karate throughout the world. The association's headquarters are at the Chito Ryu Hombu Dojo in Kumamoto, Japan. Senior representatives of the ICRKA, including the Soke, make regular visits to countries practising Chito Ryu. An international competition, The Soke Cup, is organized every three years. In 1998 the Soke Cup will be in Richmond Hill (Toronto), Ontario, Canada. Membership in the ICRKA is through the national Chito Ryu associations of its member countries. Its basic Kata are Shiho-Hai, Niseishi, Seisan, Rohai, Bassai and Chinto. Its main stances are seisan-dachi, shiko-dachi, kosa-dachi, uchi-hachiji-dachi and sanchin-dachi.
