Karate – A system of personal self-defence

Karate, “empty hands”, began in Okinawa, Japan. “Empty hands”, karate, was developed and highly popularized on this Japanese Island. This traditional art form continues today throughout Japan and is an integral activity in much of Japanese culture. Karate has since become extremely popular outside Japan and is practiced passionately in almost every country worldwide.

Kids

The benefits of karate extend far beyond self-defence or the competition floor. Most karate participants never compete, preferring to focus on other benefits such as fitness, healthy lifestyle, life-skill, friendship and personal development. Karate also builds self-confidence, self-awareness, and selfesteem. One who participates in karate knows the great magnitude of what they are capable of, regardless of their age, sex, social history or size. They remain calm in stressful situations, learning to relax and clear the mind of distractions. These attributes are carried into all other aspects of life.

Karate Kid

Karate participants come from all walks of life, including men and women of all ages and children as young as four years old. The only prerequisite is desire.

Karate BC is one of Canada’s premiere karate organizations. Leaders in training and coaching since 1974, Karate BC is the only sanctioned sport governing body for karate in British Columbia, with 4000 plus members across the province training at over 120 officially recognized karate clubs.

Proper training is key to the art of karate. Improper training can lead to dangerous injuries, and wasted energy. Clubs that are members of Karate BC are strictly regulated, ensuring standardized, quality instruction and the highest levels of safety possible. Karate BC utilizes some of the top karate instructors and officials in the country for training and seminars. All instructors for Karate BC must be certified by Canada’s National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) and are required to undergo police background checks. Anyone can open a karate school or club. The only way to guarantee the highest standard of quality, expertise and safety is to make sure the club you join is a member of Karate BC.
